Afterschool students will recognize that engineers design technologies to solve problems dealing with air, water, and soil contamination in many parts of the country and in their local communities. Students read and discuss the story “Saving Salila’s Turtle.” Students will be challenged to think as environmental engineers, work on identifying possible sources of pollution, and consider solutions to solving problems related to the quality of drinking water. After discussing the story, students will be able to trace Salila’s use of the Engineering Design Process and see why each step is important. For the next 13 weeks students will learn about pollution, identifying possible ways to avoid contamination by the Engineering Design Process including, Planning, Creating, Testing and improving water filtration. |
